MARTA MARIA WHISTLER

Born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, but an American citizen, Marta Maria Whistler comes from a family with wide international contacts and interests. She was educated in Europe, Canada, and the United States, with a strong academic background in painting and sculpture.

Whistler's art consists of bold imaginative statements. Her paintings are noted for their daring colors and prevailing theme of man's place in the universe.

Art critics describe her work as a way of trying to find a common psychological or philosophical denominator which could condense and sum up an overall impression. The prevailing theme is the one of the enslavement of man through forces he does not understand. In the subjective and psychological sense, the human beings of these paintings and sculptures realize their impotence facing the inexorable forces of nature, which in turn work toward individual extinction.
