September 2007
Marta Whistler month-long solo exhibition of "Textural Paintings" at the noted Baum School of Art, Allentown, PA was extremely well-attended and well-received. Art critic Geoff Gehman, of the Allentown Morning Call reviewed the exhibition:
PAINTINGS TEXTURED AND TEXTILED
"The Baum School of Art is an open house for paintings, textiles and painted textiles. Its current exhibit of Marta Whistler's textured, textiled abstract oils places all three birds in one cage.
Whistler's signature style is a lightly reliefed, biting grid woven with metrical splotches of bright, ghostly colors. Tightly or loosely spaced, troweled or fingernailed, her paintings are compellingly lit and delightfully loomed. Looming is not the only illusion; one can also spot a trellised chalkboard and a birch-bark lantern.
Every now and then Whistler changes the plot. One fairly dark, densely circled, bubbling oil could be mistaken for peacocked wallpaper designed by William Morris. Another work wriggles with translucent yellow-red serpentine lines so delicately painted, they could have been dyed."
